Located in the canton of Valais, Switzerland, Sion is a town steeped in history. A mixture of castles, old town and museums mixed with H&M and Body Shop stores. This could be horrendous but I think it works really well. In fact, I could see myself living here - near to the mountains, plenty of coffee options, heaps of sunshine and clean air. Hmmmm...
So, let me take you on a stroll/hike on a blazing hot day in August 2022 (with a smattering of images from an equally hot day in August 2017).
The walk up to the Chateau looks quite daunting with it's imposing ruins towering above you. In reality, it's no more difficult than any 'normal' alpine hike. The exposed nature of the trail makes it susceptible to any weather and a reasonable pair of trainers helps but, we saw people in flip flops too. Take a drink and a hat on a hot sunny day or a drink and an umbrella on a rainy day and enjoy
The earliest evidence of human settlement in what is now Sion was 6200BC. The town now is the capital of the Valais region in Switzerland. Home to about 35k residents as is listed as one of the driest and sunniest areas of Switzerland.
Just across from the Chateau de Torbillon, lies an equally impressive Basilique. Built a little earlier than the Torbillon, both sites are listed as a 'Swiss heritage site of national interest'.
