If you’ve ever tried to cancel your Adobe subscription and found you need to pay a cancellation fee, then this article is for you.
I bet you didn’t even realise you were in a yearly plan when you signed up as it’s such a different business model from virtually every other service.
It’s a task to just to find out when the renewal date is and then there is only a short window of opportunity to cancel before it renews again. You can’t cancel in advance and let it run out like you can for many subscription services.
Adobe have gone out of their way to hide their billing practices locking subscribers into plans they no longer want or can afford.
After many hours of searching the Adobe site, asking ChatGPT, and watching YouTube videos, I finally found a way to get out of the contract and pay no cancellation fee.
One method I’ve seen mentioned several times is to swap your plan to another, then cancel the new plan. I looked into this but deemed it too risky, as I was already on the cheapest Lightroom only plan. There didn’t seem to be a consensus that this would work and I didn’t want to get locked into an even more expensive plan.
Here’s how I did it…
Firstly go to helpx.adobe.com/uk/support.html and locate the Live Chat icon at the bottom right of the screen.
Next ask the chat bot for a human. You may have to ask several times but eventually you’ll be asked if you want to chat with an advisor. Say ‘yes’ to this.
Once you’re through to a person, explain that you can no longer afford the plan. You can see my exact conversation below. I remained calm and polite and explained the situation
The agent offered to cancel my subscription and waive the cancellation fee. It takes 24 hours to go through but after that you should be home free.
You’ll get an email 24 hours later confirming deletion. At that point you can delete your Adobe Cloud account.
I debated writing this article because getting out of the contract turned out to be relatively straightforward and the agent was very understanding. However, Adobe’s business practices are deliberately misleading and they do their best to stop you from leaving. If this article helps just one person, then it was worth writing.
